Cancer Rehabilitation
Inpatient Services
CentraState's Rehabilitation Department provides therapy services to inpatients needing early mobilization, strengthening, ADL (activities of daily living) training and speech services. By integrating the therapist "on floor" concept, the department ensures that rehabilitation specialists are readily available to consult with and support each patient's clinical team and develop a program best suited to each patient's needs and capabilities. The team approach is the patient’s best avenue for early recovery and return to function.
 
To support the Medical Center's pain initiative, the Rehabilitation team offers Reiki therapy as an adjunctive pain control technique for inpatients.
Outpatient Services
A variety of rehabilitation services are available on an outpatient basis— included specialized physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy programs. The Rehabilitation Department is also noted for its FitCare program, a specialized, structured exercise program for recovering patients to help build stamina.
 
Additionally, CentraState's Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center offers integrative therapy programs—such as yoga, Reiki, T'ai Chi, raindrop technique and massage therapy—as well as exercise programs appropriate for recovering cancer patients. Integrative therapies enhance the mind-body connection, while helping individuals to combat stress, build energy and boost immunity.
Lymphedema Center
CentraState offers traditional therapies along with advanced treatments such as the ones that we use in our Lymphedema Center — one of only a few programs in New Jersey recognized by the National Lymphedema Network. A painful condition in which excess fluid collects in tissue and causes swelling, lymphedema may occur in the arm or leg after lymph vessels or lymph nodes in the underarm or groin are removed or treated with radiation, as is the case in certain cancer treatments.
 
The program has completed more than 2,000 treatments since its inception in 1999. The program is staffed by specially trained, certified therapists who are members of theNational Lymphedema Network. They design a personalized treatment plan for patients, which includes education about their condition.
