Diagnostic Services

CentraState provides state-of-the art cancer diagnostic services in a friendly and caring community setting. Our capabilities include:
  • Laboratory and pathology services
  • Diagnostic and interventional radiology services
  • Specialized services for women
Laboratory and Pathology Services
The Department of Pathology is actively involved in histologic review and diagnosis of all surgical specimens submitted to the Laboratory. This includes tissue sent from physicians' private offices, the Operating Room and inpatient and outpatient care units. Our pathologists also assist CentraState's interventional radiologists in performing CT-guided and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirations and/or biopsies.

To ensure quality cancer care, all newly diagnosed cancer cases are reviewed within the department by more than one pathologist, and all complex cases are sent to Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) for diagnostic consultation or confirmation of the diagnosis. In order to understand clinical pathologic correlations, complex cases are discussed with the attending physicians and the x-rays are reviewed by pathologists.

Introperative frozen section diagnoses are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The final diagnoses on the majority of tumor cases are reported within 24 hours of receiving the specimen. On-site immediate evaluations of fine needle aspirations are also available.
Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Services
Our state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging services include ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine and angiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET).

At our MRI facility Freehold MR Associates, a joint venture with Freehold Radiology Group, we are one of the first in the United States to install the new Magnetom Espree 1.5 Tesla Open Bore MRI. This revolutionary MRI model—which joins our high-field short bore MRI— incorporates both an open design with a high-field magnet, providing more head, elbow and leg room that can make a crucial difference for larger patients and those who experience discomfort in confined spaces.

Our CT scanning capabilities include the most advanced technology in computed tomography: a Brilliance 64-Slice CT Scanner, which shows CT images with several times more detail and speed than standard CT scanners in use today at most hospitals or diagnostic centers. It gives radiologists the ability to image problems and suspected pathology that previously could only be viewed using invasive procedures.

Our PET/CT combination scanner offers superior diagnostic capabilities. PET/CT fusion is the most advanced non-invasive medical imaging technique available today. It combines the fine structural detail of CT with PET's ability to detect changes in cell function in order to identify both the presence of disease and its precise location. This combination allows for earlier and more accurate detection of disease than PET alone. It can assist in the staging and monitoring of tumors and help physicians determine the correct course of therapy.

Our Nuclear Medicine Department offers the latest technology for delivering routine and specialized oncology services. Nuclear medicine uses radioisotopes to detect and treat a variety of cancers. Bone scans, leukocyte and gallium studies, radioactive iodine for thyroid cancer, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) scans and octreo scans assist in providing a thorough diagnosis and staging workup for oncology patients as well as treatment options.
Women's Health Center Services
Our Women's Health Center, with its all-female team of registered radiology technologists, addresses the specific health concerns of women through a range of specialized services including:
  • mammography using the new CAD System (computer-aided detection) for improved accuracy (increasing the rate of detection by up to 23 percent)
  • sterotactic needle biopsy
  • ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (ultrasound Mammotome biopsy)
  • ultrasound-guided breast cyst aspiration
  • breast needle localization
The Women's Health Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology, which sets the standards for quality in radiology, and received a perfect score from the state for complying with the Mammography Quality Standards Act.
