Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center (HAC) - The first of its kind in NJ

At the nationally recognized Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center at CentraState Medical Center, patients and their loved ones have several options from which to choose for cancer prevention, health and wellness, education, and support groups.

Here are just a few of the programs and activities we offer at the HAC:
  • Free prostate, colorectal and skin cancer screenings. Regular cancer screenings are part of a healthy lifestyle, and play a vital part in early detection of cancer, which increases your chances of survival.
  • Integrative (holistic) therapies and activities such as meditation
  • Lectures by board-certified physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating cancers
  • Nutrition classes
  • Smoking cessation and prevention classes

While living a healthy life is no guarantee against cancer, it enables you to stay one step ahead

Breast Cancer Screenings

While one in eight women may be diagnosed with breast cancer, early detection through mammography offers the most promising hope for survival. The Women’s Health Center at CentraState is accredited by the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

Call (732) 294-2778 to schedule your mammogram today.

Lung Cancer Screenings

As with all cancers, early detection is critical. Unfortunately, because there are often few or no symptoms, the majority of lung cancer cases are diagnosed in the later stages of cancer development.

If you have any of the following risk factors, you may want to consider getting a low dose cat scan that is now approved by the NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) as a screening for lung cancer:
  • History of smoking
  • Occupational exposure (asbestos)
  • Radon exposure
  • Cancer history
  • Family history of cancer
  • Exposure to second hand smoke
  • Lung disease (COPD, Emphysema, Pulmonary Fibrosis)

Other risk factors are determined by your age combined with how many cigarettes and for how many years you have smoked. You should discuss these issues with your physician. You also will need a prescription from a physician to schedule a CT lung cancer screening.

Melanoma/Skin Cancer Screenings

In addition to skin cancer screenings by dermatologists, the Health Awareness Center also offers MoleSafe, an advanced early detection program that is only available at one hospital in New Jersey – CentraState.

For more information, call (732) 308-0570.

CentraState Wellness and Fitness Center

The fitness and wellness center offers a variety of programs to help keep you in the best of health.

The choices are all here: it’s up to you and your doctors to determine the best options for you. And they’re all right here in your own backyard.
