Cardiac Rehabilitation

The Cardiac Rehabilitation program at CentraState's Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus offers a three-phase approach to achieving improved physical and emotional health. The program is appropriate for adults who have been diagnosed with cardiovascular conditions such as angina, and those recovering from a heart attack or a cardiac procedure, such as coronary angioplasty, coronary bypass surgery, heart valve surgery or heart transplant.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). The medical director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation program is a board-certified cardiologist. The team includes registered nurses with cardiac-care experience and training specific to cardiac rehabilitation who are certified by the American Heart Association in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).

Phase I - Education & Support
Phase I takes place during hospitalization following a diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Patients are taught about living with or overcoming their cardiac condition and how to prepare for life at home. Important guidance about coronary disease risk factors, recovery, diet, medications, physical activity and safe home recovery is provided.
Phase II - Exercise Program
Phase II consists of monitored exercise two to three times a week that is tailored to fit each patient's individual needs. As the program progresses, the exercise becomes more vigorous, helping patients gain confidence as well as improve their functional capacity. The program usually lasts up to three months and incorporates walking, weight training and other supervised activity using equipment such as treadmills, stationary bikes, rowers, stair climbers and arm ergometers. In order to participate in this program, patients need a doctor's referral and must recently have undergone a stress test.
Phase III - Follow-Up Program
Phase III offers graduates of Phase II the opportunity to continue a supervised exercise program while working on their own exercise program at home. The program meets twice a week and may continue for up to 16 weeks. A physician referral is required for participation.
Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle
Upon completion of the Cardiac Rehabilitation program, patients can choose to continue their commitment to health and well-being through the Fitness and Wellness Center, the Integrative Health & Preventive Cardiology Program, and the Health Awareness Center—all conveniently located at CentraState's Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus.
