Preventing and Managing Diabetes
|
|
Diabetes is one of the most serious diseases in America, affecting 24 million people. If it is not well cared for, diabetes can lead to heart and kidney disease, amputation, blindness, stroke and even death.
Many people with diabetes think these problems can't be avoided, but with good medical care and education, that isn't the case. Studies show that people with diabetes do better when they have help from a healthcare team.
A recent landmark national study has also found that people at an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, including those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, can prevent the progression of the disease with proper diet and exercise.

Do You Have Diabetes?
|
|
You may have diabetes and not know it. If you have ever been told that you have "borderline diabetes," or that your blood sugar is high, you need to be tested for diabetes. Having your blood sugar tested by your doctor is the only way to know for sure if you have diabetes. Look at the statements listed below. If more than three statements apply to you, you may be at high risk for diabetes. Call your doctor for a blood sugar test.
- I am over 40 years old.
- I am African-American, Latino, Native American, or Asian.
- I do not get regular exercise.
- I have a parent, sibling, grandparent, aunt, or uncle who has/had diabetes.
- I am overweight.
- I am very thirsty and urinate often.
- I have tingling, burning, or numbness in my toes or feet.
- I often have blurry vision.
- I have had more than one baby who weighed more than nine pounds.
- I am often very fatigued.

Controlling Diabetes (Insulin Pump)
|
|
Diabetes can't be cured, but we now know how to help you prevent most problems that diabetes can cause. When you have diabetes, your body cannot control your blood sugar level, so it is higher than normal.
Your blood sugar is the key—if you control it, you improve your ability to prevent diabetic complications. The Novo Nordisk Diabetes Center can help you control your blood sugar, whether you've had diabetes for many years, have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, or have just found out you have diabetes.
The Novo Nordisk Diabetes Pump Program provides a special eight-hour class about the principles and use of the insulin pump, presented by experienced registered nurses and a registered dietitian.
Issues covered include: an in-depth discussion of diabetes, the function of insulin produced by the pancreas versus the insulin pump, the benefits and risks of the insulin pump, the signs, causes and treatment of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, prevention of DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a bihormonal disorder in which insulin levels are too low and glucagen levels are too high), sick day management, and nutritional management including carbohydrate counting.
This class can be scheduled following diabetes management by an endocrinologist. A physician referral is required. After the class, a patient goes "live" on the insulin pump during a full day at the Novo Nordisk Diabetes Center.

Controlling Diabetes (Gestational Diabetes)
|
CentraState's Novo Nordisk Diabetes Center offers special instruction for women who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes—diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. This educational program includes instruction on self-blood-glucose monitoring and meal planning to ensure adequate nutrition for pregnancy and blood glucose control. Participants call in daily blood sugar results, which are forwarded to the patient's obstetrician/gynecologist. Insulin instruction is available for those women who require it during their pregnancy.
To participate in this program, a physician referral or prescription is required.

Diabetes Classes
|
|
Our comprehensive program teaches individuals with diabetes how to manage all aspects of their disease. We try to ensure compliance with self-blood-glucose-monitoring procedures for optimal health. We also develop a balanced meal plan tailored to the individual’s specific goals.
Our program consists of an initial one-on-one assessment at which time a medical history is taken, blood glucose monitoring technique is evaluated or taught, and a Carville-foot screening is performed. Patients are asked to bring copies of recent lab reports so we can see current levels relating to glycemic control. After all classes have been completed, six- and 12-month follow-up visits are scheduled to review goals accomplished.
The rest of the program consists of 10 hours of class time learning about diabetes and its effects on the body.
We also offer insulin initiation programs, a gestational diabetes program and an insulin pump program. One-on-one consultations are also available for patients with specialized needs.

Treating Diabetic Neuropathy
|
|
Triple nerve decompression surgery is a dynamic new treatment for diabetic neuropathy that can help re-establish nerve function throughout an arm or leg in order to relieve pain, restore feeling, and reduce the risk of amputation. It is an outpatient procedure that involves three small incisions and lasts approximately an hour and a half.
Postoperative discomfort typically is minimal, and the procedure has an approximately 90 percent success rate in reducing pain and increasing sensation in properly selected patients. The results are long-lasting, so a second surgery is rarely required, and triple nerve decompression surgery is covered by most insurance companies.
Diabetic neuropathy is a nerve disorder that affects approximately 60 percent of the nation’s 24 million people with diabetes. It results from a heightened blood sugar level, which, among other things, causes nerves to swell. The swelling pinches the nerves in the "tunnels" that the nerves pass through and results in weakness, numbness and pain in the hands and feet.
As a result of the numbness, patients tend to be unaware of blisters, cuts and abrasions on the skin, particularly on the feet. Without care, such wounds can worsen and become infected, and eventually amputation may be required. On average, nearly 100,000 amputations are performed annually on people with diabetes.
Specially Trained Surgeon
Triple nerve decompression surgery is performed at CentraState Medical Center by Michael Rose, MD, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with a special interest in peripheral nerves. Dr. Rose is part of the team at the Plastic Surgery Center in Shrewsbury and is one of the few doctors in Monmouth County to perform triple nerve decompression surgery.
