CentraState’s Lymphedema Center is one of only a few centers in New Jersey that is recognized by the National Lymphedema Network. It is staffed by specially trained, certified therapists who are members of the National Lymphedema Network of North America. We design a personalized treatment plan for our patients and to educate them about their condition.
Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid between cells that causes swelling, most often in the arms and legs. Occasionally other parts of the body are affected. This condition can develop when lymphatic channels normally carrying this fluid are impaired or missing (primary lymphedema), or when these channels are damaged or surgically removed (secondary lymphedema).
While lymphedema is often a chronic, progressive condition, it is highly treatable and manageable with proper care. The most effective form of treatment to-date is complete decongestive therapy (CDT). This consists of manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging, use of a sequential compression pump, proper skin care and diet, use of compression garments, remedial exercises, and directed self-care.
