CentraState Healthcare System Partners with the Affiliated Physicians and Employers Health Plan to Offer New Community-Based Health Program to Local Employers

NEW JERSEY - CentraState Healthcare System, a nonprofit community health organization in New Jersey, today announced its partnership with the Affiliated Physicians and Employers Health (APEHP), a New Jersey self-insured Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangement Health Plan, to offer an alternative health plan for the Central New Jersey community. This plan is the first of its kind in New Jersey to focus on offering health care coverage to businesses within an organization’s surrounding area.

The plan, known as the CentraState Community Health Plan, was designed as a way to ease the worries of small business owners in Central New Jersey who – due to the Affordable Care Act and additional outside factors – are seeing dramatic rises in health plan costs while experiencing significant reductions in benefits. The CentraState Community Health Plan, offered through the APEHP, is being managed by QualCare Alliance Networks Inc., (QualCare) New Jersey’s largest provider-sponsored managed care organization.

The coverage area for this plan will span several areas in Central New Jersey. APEHP and CentraState have designed a plan at competitive prices – roughly 15-17% below similar plans in APEHP’s existing small group portfolio – that will encourage small to medium sized employers in the community to join.

“We have had remarkable success with this employer health plan and saw this as an opportunity to create a similar product that is solely for the Central Jersey community,” said Dawn Wright, Vice President of Insurance Services for the APEHP’s Administrator, QualCare Management Resources. “This is New Jersey’s first community-based product that will offer small and mid-sized businesses a health plan centered around a local health care system and its providers, while still providing these businesses with the full breadth of the expansive QualCare network.”

When CentraState’s senior executives began noticing the rise in health plan rates in their area, they looked for alternatives that would allow them to create a plan that would bring together employers and allow business owners more control over the health of their employees.

“As part of our mission to improve our community’s health, we were eager to assist our area businesses in finding a cost effective way to manage their health costs and ultimately the health of their employees,” said John T. Gribbin, President and CEO for CentraState Healthcare System in Freehold, New Jersey.

In addition to providing coverage to small business owners, many of whom are in the service or retail industry, the new health plan is aiming to reach independent physician practices as well as CentraState employees. Over time, the plan may extend its network to larger businesses in a wider radius.

“Successfully partnering with CentraState, whose reputation in central New Jersey is exceptional,  allows us the opportunity to find other areas in the state that are in need of a similar product,” said James Wolf, MD, President of Affiliated Physicians and Employers Health Plan.
