Made possible by a donation from the Michael Gerard Puharic Memorial Fund, Inc.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP—The Colette Cipriano Special Care Nursery in the First Impressions Maternity Center at CentraState Medical Center recently celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony the official opening of its Michael’s Feat Family Room. The construction of the room was made possible by a $31,000 donation from Michael’s Feat, the Michael Gerard Puharic Memorial Fund, Inc., which is a local, non-profit organization dedicated to giving comfort and easing the burden of parents caring for seriously ill newborns. Michael’s Feat is named in loving memory of organization founders Adam and Dana Puharic’s son, Michael Gerard, who was only three days old when he died.

The new Michael’s Feat Family Room is a relaxing, “living room away from home” environment for parents caring for their sick babies. The room is decorated with soft furniture and warm wood flooring, equipped with a sleeper sofa, and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“CentraState Healthcare System is grateful to the Puharic Family and Michael’s Feat for their generous contribution of the family room in our Special Care Nursery. What had once been unused space is now a beautiful room where family members can go to relax and visit with family, yet still be close to their newborn. It is a wonderful addition to the hospital,” says John T. Gribbin, FACHE, president & CEO of CentraState Healthcare System.

“Having a seriously ill child can be tremendously stressful for parents. Thanks to Michael’s Feat, parents and their family will now have a quiet place to go and relax. These special places are so important to offer to our families and CentraState is fortunate enough to now have this special room for our families,” says Anthony Marino, MD, medical director of Maternal Child Services at CentraState Medical Center.

The Colette Cipriano Special Care Nursery at CentraState Medical Center is licensed by the N.J. Department of Health and Senior Services as an intermediate care, level 2 special care nursery. Neonatologists and highly skilled nursery nursing staff are on duty 24/7 to provide individualized, supportive and compassionate care specific to the needs of each newborn patient in the unit. Respiratory therapists and social workers also complement the care team.

The Special Care Nursery provides care for premature babies born after 32 weeks gestation who require oxygen, antibiotics, close observation or other special attention for complications such as infection, breathing problems, small size and weight, low temperature or blood sugar, or other emergencies. It includes phototherapy lighting for jaundice, incubators with minimal light and noise exposure, and warmers that regulate body temperatures while allowing direct observation and easy access for physicians, nurses and the newborns’ parents. The Special Care Nursery can accommodate up to eight special care newborns at a time.
