Arthritis, injuries or simply years of use can damage joints, causing a breakdown in the cartilage that cushions them. When this happens, the bones become more exposed and rub together with every movement, resulting in joint pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of mobility that can affect every aspect of your life—walking, recreation, leisure, family life and work.
The Total Joint Center can help you return to an active lifestyle and a higher quality of living through an advanced joint program that offers comprehensive treatment options, both surgical and non-surgical.

Preparing for Joint Replacement Surgery
To meet your scheduling needs, aclinical coordinator at CentraState will work with you to plan all preoperative appointments and consultations. A physical therapist will guide you through a personalized exercise regimen to prepare you physically for surgery, because preoperative strength-training activities have been shown to reduce recovery time and make physical rehabilitation easier. Education classes are offered to introduce you to the staff, explain medical devices that may be used, and familiarize you with the unit in which you will stay following surgery.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
The orthopedic surgeons at The Total Joint Center offer a range of joint replacement surgeries using the latest prosthetic implants for longer-lasting results. They are specially trained to perform minimally invasive surgery through incisions several inches shorter than those used during conventional surgeries. Using small, flexible instruments, they can repair tissues and bones or replace joints with enhanced precision. The benefits of this approach include:
- minimal damage to surrounding tissue
- reduced risk for complications such as infection
- less scarring
- reduced pain
During surgery, the damaged joint is replaced with a specially shaped all-metal or metal-on-ceramic prosthesis that allows the joint to glide more smoothly. This helps restore normal, pain-free movement, range of motion and mobility. Instead of metal rods and other alignment devices that surgeons traditionally have used to determine the correct position of an implant, CentraState's surgeons use sophisticated computer technology in calculating the ideal position of the implant. This technology provides real-time feedback during the procedure via computer monitor that ensures precise positioning is maintained. This translates into a better fit, which increases the durability of prosthetic joints.

Successful Recovery & Outcomes
The Total Joint Center is dedicated to providing ourjoint replacement patients with around-the-clock, high-quality, compassionate care. After surgery, we use an innovative approach to pain management to ensure patients' comfort and encourage them to get up and moving as soon as possible. Most patients are walking with an assistive device the first day after surgery and are able to return home within three days of the procedure. With guidance from their surgeon and proper outpatient physical therapy, they are usually back to work and the activities they enjoy in three to six weeks. Patients who may require more intense therapy after joint replacement can receive the specialized care they need at The Manor, CentraState's 123-bed health and rehabilitation facility next door to the hospital.
