Continence Rehabilitation

Urinary incontinence is a common problem, but it is not a normal part of aging. It affects men and women of all age, and it usually can be treated, using properly administered physical therapy techniques. That is just what the continence rehabilitation specialists at CentraState’s OceanFirst Rehabilitation Center provide.

There are several types on incontinence:

Urge Incontinence
Urge Incontinence is caused by an overactive bladder that empties without your
permission. This type of incontinence usually occurs when you feel a sudden,
strong urge to urinate but fail to make it to the bathroom without leaking. You may also
urinate frequently and lose moderate to large amounts of urine when you leak.

Stress Incontinence
Stress Incontinence is usually caused by weak pelvic floor muscles which is often
the result of childbirth. This type of incontinence usually occurs when you leak
urine during coughing, sneezing, exercising, or other movements.

Overflow Incontinence
Overflow Incontinence occurs when the bladder fails to empty completely. This type
of incontinence usually occurs when you lose small amounts of urine throughout the
day and night, or when you get up often during the night to urinate. You may also
feel like you have to empty your bladder but can't, or you may spend a long time in the
bathroom, but produce only a weak, dribbling stream of urine.
How CentraState’s Program Works
A continence rehabilitation specialist at the OceanFirst Rehabilitation Center will conduct a comprehensive evaluation and design an individualized program consisting of 6 to 8 visits. Depending on the severity and cause of the incontinence, the program might include:
  • Pelvic floor exercises to strengthen your pelvic muscles and improve control
  • Biofeedback/surface EMG to help you know that you're contracting the right muscles
  • Real-time ultrasound that allows you to view the actual muscles while they are contracting
  • Education on lifestyle changes that decrease bladder irritability
  • Maintaining a bladder diary to aid in retraining
  • Relaxation and breathing techniques
