Hand Therapy
Whether due to an acute injury or chronic overuse, painful hand and upper extremity conditions can affect your work, your hobbies, and your life. Hand therapy treats injuries and conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder—relieving pain and restoring mobility. Treatment is typically provided by either an occupational or physical therapist who specializes in rehabilitating patients with problems affecting the hands and arms.

At CentraState’s OceanFirst Rehabilitation Center, our Certified Hand Therapist treats:
  • Those who may have been involved in an accident leaving them with wounds, scars, burns, frostbite, injured tendons and/or nerves, fractures, or even amputations.
  • Those who suffer from the effects of repetitive-type disorders, such as tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Those with arthritic conditions and neurological conditions affecting the arms or hands.
About Certified Hand Therapists

Hand therapy is a highly specialized field, requiring continuing education, and most often, advanced certification. In order to practice, Certified Hand Therapists must have a minimum of five years of clinical experience and pass a comprehensive test of advanced clinical skills and theory in upper-quarter rehabilitation.

Because of the technical complexity of hand and arm surgeries, to become certified therapists must also be knowledgeable about leading-edge surgical techniques and postoperative therapy programs. This advanced knowledge enables our Certified Hand Therapist to work with you to hasten your recovery and help you return to a productive lifestyle.
 
When you work with our Certified Hand Therapist, you can be assured of the highest level of competency in the profession and that you are truly in the best of hands.
Evaluation and Treatment

Following a thorough examination, our Certified Hand Therapist will develop an individualized treatment plan for you that may include:

  • Customized splint fabrication
  • Wound care
  • Range-of-motion and strengthening exercises
  • Control of swelling
  • Moist heat and cold therapy
  • Neuromuscular re-education
  • Ultrasound, cold laser, and electrical stimulation
  • Iontophoresis (Delivers medication through the skin to control pain and swelling in smaller muscle groups. It can also be used to introduce medicines to soften scar tissue or desensitize thickening nerve tissues.)
  • Phonopohoresis (Delivers medication through the skin to control pain and swelling in major muscle groups.)
  • Scar and soft tissue massage
  • Desensitization and sensory re-education
  • Joint protection education
  • Therapeutic activities
  • Customized home exercise programs
Making an Appointment

You will need a referral from your physician to the OceanFirst Rehabilitation Center at CentraState. If you have medical insurance, we suggest that you check with the insurer to verify coverage.

Please call (732) 294-2700 to set up your first appointment. We will keep your physician informed of your progress, and answer any questions he or she may have.

The OceanFirst Rehabilitation Center is located at CentraState’s Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus, adjacent to CentraState Medical Center.
