Radiation Oncology

World-Class Care in a Supportive Setting

As part of our comprehensive Cancer Program, CentraState offers a world-class Radiation Oncology facility in the Donna O'Donnell, RN Medical Arts Building on our Freehold campus. Our facility is staffed by leading radiation oncology experts working in collaboration with pathologists, hematologists, oncologists, surgeons and other cancer specialists to achieve the best possible results. They provide the latest and most technologically advanced external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and brachytherapy (internal radiation therapy) treatments available to cancer patients in a compassionate and supportive environment.

In addition to the highest-quality care, as part of CentraState's comprehensive Cancer Program, we offer our patients a wealth of support services -- such as our Cancer Navigator Program, complementary therapies (e.g., Reiki, massage), support groups, palliative care, and more.
State-of-the-Art Technology
Our Radiation Oncology facility offers the same types of advanced technology available at the premier cancer centers across the United States, including:
  • Varian 21 EX linear accelerator (treatment machine) with On Board Imaging including Cone Beam CT
  • GE dedicated CT simulator for true 3D treatment planning
  • BrainLAB Radiosurgery system
  • Nucletron high dose rate brachytherapy system
  • Philips treatment planning computer system
We also use IMPAC, an integrated clinical and administrative management solution designed specifically for radiation oncology. The system helps coordinate and streamline the entire radiation therapy process and supports independent validation, automatic setup, accurate delivery and thorough documentation to support the quality and efficiency of care for the patient.

Coming soon, is new technology for proton therapy.
Wide-Ranging Therapeutic Uses
Our radiation therapy equipment is effective for all cancer types — including breast, colorectal, esophageal, gastric, gynecologic, head and neck (e.g., larynx, salivary glands, sinuses, tongue), lung, pancreatic, prostate, and tumors of the brain and spinal cord— as well as for benign, or non-cancerous, lesions (for example, meningiomas, certain pituitary growths, keloids and heterotopic bone growths). Radiation therapy is also used to relieve symptoms from diseases that have spread to the bones, brain and other organs.
Access to Research & Clinical Trials
CentraState is affiliated with the Robert Wood Johnson Health Network and The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, which offers the latest in cancer research, treatment, prevention, and education. We are also one of only 60 sites nationwide approved to participate in clinical trials sponsored by the Cancer Trials Support Unit (CTSU) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Through these affiliations, we are able to access the latest breakthroughs in cancer research and clinical trials, and provide advanced, state-of-the-art care in our own community.

Fully Accredited
The Radiation Oncology Department is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) through July 2013. Widely recognized as a measure of quality care, ACR accreditation is valid for three years and includes on-site surveys performed by board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists.
CentraState's comprehensive Cancer Program, which includes our Radiation Oncology services, is accredited by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC), the country's primary approval organization that sets the standard for cancer care programs in the nation. In 2008, the CoC awarded our Cancer Program an Outstanding Achievement Award based on its performance during its 2007 reaccreditation survey. Only 66 of the 453 cancer programs nationwide that were surveyed in 2007 received this award, and CentraState was one of only five in New Jersey to achieve the honor. CoC accreditation is valid for three years.
