Myths About Lung Cancer
  • "Lung cancer is not treatable."
  • "Only smokers get it."
  • "My parents were lifelong smokers and never got it so neither will I."
  • "I don't have symptoms so I couldn't have it."

Lung Cancer Risk Reduction
The leading causes of lung cancer are smoking and exposure to industrial toxins, such as asbestos. If you are or have been a heavy smoker, or if you work or have worked in an industrial environment, you should have a yearly chest X-ray because you are at a higher risk for lung cancer. A better form of risk reduction, however, is not to smoke. If you or someone you care about need help quitting, CentraState’s Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center offers a comprehensive smoking cessation program. For more information and to register, call (732) 308-0570.
Multidisciplinary Approach to Care
Following a diagnosis of lung cancer, patients often require the oversight of more than one type of specialist. This can mean shuttling between physicians in different geographic locations who may not even know each other. Patients and family members may encounter additional frustrations and lose precious time while seeking referrals, arranging appointments and coordinating communication among these care providers.

The program's multidisciplinary approach to care avoids these complications by centralizing and integrating the process. Led by an outstanding group of board-certified physicians from key medical disciplines, the lung cancer team uses the members’ combined expertise to oversee and coordinate every aspect of patient care—from diagnosis and treatment to recovery, post-care and follow up. Their close working relationship and geographical proximity ensures continuity of care and helps to produce the best outcomes for patients.
The Most Advanced Diagnostic and Treatment Technology
The LungCare Comprehensive Cancer Program uses the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technology available, including state-of-the-art, image-guided radiation therapy, chemotherapy and advanced surgical procedures. CentraState is one of the few area hospitals to perform video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Through the hospital’s affiliation with The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the LungCare Program has access to the latest research and clinical advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Compassionate Patient Care

Along with the multidisciplinary team, our specially trained patient care staff works closely with patients and their families to provide education, compassion, support and guidance. They understand the physical and emotional challenges involved in living with a serious disease and make a point of understanding the unique needs of each individual in their care. This type of personalized attention helps patients and their families stay positive and strong during what can be a difficult journey.
