FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP—CentraState Medical Center now offers single-incision laparoscopic colectomy, a new surgical technique to remove all or part of the colon through one small incision at the navel. This procedure is one of the latest advancements in minimally-invasive colorectal surgery and currently available at only a few, select hospitals nationwide. Colorectal surgery is used to treat or prevent diseases of the colon such as diverticulitis, benign polyps and cancer.
Single-incision colectomy provides a significantly less invasive alternative to standard open colectomy, which requires a long (six inches or longer) incision across the abdomen, and even laparoscopic colectomy, using three to four small incisions. Single-incision colectomy is performed through only one small incision around the navel through which a surgeon inserts a flexible scope and other surgical tools. Patient benefits include significantly faster recovery time, less scarring and pain, and reduced risk of infection. Depending on the severity of disease, some patients may go home the day after surgery and resume most normal activities within a few weeks.
CentraState Medical Center also offers single-incision laparoscopic surgery for gallbladder and appendix procedures. For more information about single-incision laparoscopic colectomy and other laparoscopic surgical services, call 866-CENTRA7 (866-236-8727)or visit
