FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP—Two advanced endoscopic surgical procedures are now offered at CentraState Medical Center to diagnose certain types of cancer and other diseases related to the lungs, pancreas, esophagus and lower rectum. Due to the minimally invasive nature of both procedures, patients can usually go home the same day.
The endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), performed by a board certified gastroenterologist, is used to examine cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas and rectum. It is also used to evaluate chronic pancreatitis and other masses or cysts of the pancreas. EUS is used in the study of bile duct abnormalities, muscles of the lower rectum and anal canal, and "submucosal" lesions that may be hiding in the intestinal wall. The procedure can incorporate Doppler ultrasound to study blood flow in vessels.
The endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is also a powerful yet minimally invasive surgical procedure to diagnose lung cancer, chest infections and other diseases causing enlarged lymph nodes in the chest. The procedure is performed by a board-certified thoracic surgeon who is specially trained in EBUS.
In both EUS and EBUS procedures, patient treatment can begin faster due to the speed and accuracy of high quality, real-time images of difficult-to-reach areas. Needle aspirations can also be performed to obtain issue or fluid samples. All Endoscopy Suite surgical procedures are supported by the full resources of CentraState Medical Center, should additional care be required.
