Types of Pain.

Most pain can be treated effectively. Depending on factors such as age, personality, perception, pain threshold and past experiences, pain affects each person differently. Psychological factors such as fear, depression or stress also can influence the degree of pain experienced. Insomnia, fatigue and anxiety can lower the pain threshold, while rest, sleep and diversion can raise it.

When you receive care through The Spine Institute of Central Jersey, we do a thorough evaluation to determine the best path of relief for your particular condition. Conditions that might be considered for pain management intervention include but are not limited to:
  • Arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis)
  • Bursitis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Chronic muscle spasm
  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Complications following back surgery
  • Fibromyalgia (generalized muscular pain and fatigue)
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
  • Sciatica ("shooting" leg pain) or other radiating pain
  • Shingles
  • Tendonitis
What is the first step in becoming a patient?
Patients are generally accepted by physician referral. A letter of referral from your primary physician should indicate your present condition along with his/her recommendation for a pain management evaluation. Please include the following information:
  • Medical history describing your past treatments
  • Diagnostic tests (please bring recent X-rays and MRI’s on the day of your appointment
  • Present medications
  • Insurance data (if you are covered through an HMO, you must have a referral by your HMO primary care provider)
  • Personal information (address, telephone number, etc.)
  • Upon receipt of this information, our staff will contact you to make an appointment.
What should you expect on your initial visit?
Your first appointment will involve an initial evaluation consisting of a review of medical records, a complete medical history, and a pain-oriented physical examination.
  • A specially-trained registered nurse will ask you to describe your medical history with special emphasis on your pain and how it affects you.
  • The physical examination will help the physician to determine what other tests and treatments are necessary to help you.
  • After your consultation, the pain specialist will describe what the program can offer in the management of your pain and establish an individualized treatment plan.

Pain Management
Pain is the most frequent cause of suffering and disability, impairing the quality of life for many people. It can be acute, such as after an operation or injury. It also can be a long-standing problem for which common pain-relieving therapies provide little or no relief. Regardless of the type of pain you experience or its source (for example, nerve injury, muscle spasms, back problems or cancer) steps can be taken to control it by reducing its incidence and severity.

At CentraState, our board-certified physicians specialize in the treatment and relief of pain. They take a team approach to your care by working closely with primary care physicians, specialists, physical therapists, social workers and other appropriate professionals. Our staff are committed to quality, personalized treatment that provides you relief from pain, restoration of activity, improved quality of life and peace of mind in the shortest amount of time.
