CentraState’s maternity department participates in groundbreaking safety program

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP— CentraState Medical Center is pleased to announce that it has successfully completed the trainings for the Safety Program for Perinatal Care sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

CentraState is one of only 9 hospitals in New Jersey and 61 hospitals nationwide to participate in this program that is designed to help hospitals and clinicians reduce complications during and after childbirth, making care safer for both mothers and babies.

Labor and delivery hospital units that are participating in this program will receive support to implement improvements in fostering a culture of teamwork and communication; safe medication administration; and administering safe care in focused areas, including obstetric hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, and cesarean section.

According to the AHRQ, the maternal mortality rate in the United States is rising, more than doubling from 7.7 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1997 to 17.8 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2011. Despite all of the advances in diagnostic and surgical technologies, comprehensive teamwork and improving communication remains critical in perinatal safety and improving outcomes.

“CentraState is proud to participate in this groundbreaking and crucial program, and it demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the safety and wellbeing of both our mothers-to-be and unborn patients,” says Dawn Kline, director, Maternal Child Health at CentraState Medical Center. “Our focus remains on providing the highest quality and special care practices for all types of pregnancies—before, during and after delivery.”

CentraState Medical Center’s Maternal Fetal Medicine Program provides a highly-skilled team of perinatologists (OBGYNs who are specially trained in the care of women with high-risk pregnancies), ultrasonographers, and other health care professionals. They have access to the most up-to-date medical information and state-of-the-art medical technology, combined with the caring, sensitivity and understanding needed to meet the special requirements of women with high-risk pregnancies.
