CentraState psychiatrist honored by The American Psychiatric Association

CentraState is proud to announce that Moustafa Shafey, MD, LFAPA, medical director of psychiatric services at CentraState Medical Center, has been awarded Distinguished Life Fellowship designation by The American Psychiatric Association (APA).

Distinguished Fellowship is awarded to outstanding psychiatrists who have made significant contributions to the psychiatric profession in at least five of the following areas, including administration, teaching, scientific and scholarly publications, volunteering in mental health and medical activities of social significance, community involvement, as well as for clinical excellence. Less than 5 percent of the 36,000 APA members have been chosen for Distinguished Fellowship, the highest honor the APA bestows upon its members.

Dr. Shafey earned his medical degree from Alexandria University Medical School in Egypt and completed a residency in psychiatry at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, IL, then joined the faculty there from 1989-1992. Board-certified in psychiatry and neurology and a diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Examiners, Dr. Shafey has been on the staff of CentraState and medical director of Psychiatric Services since 1992. He was appointed chairman of the Department of Psychiatry in 1997 and director of the Electro Convulsive Therapy Program in 1998. He was also named to CentraState Healthcare System’s Board of Trustees in 2011, and served as chief of medical staff from 2015-2016. Dr. Shafey also serves on the faculties of CentraState’s Family Medicine Residency Program and the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Department of Psychiatry.

Throughout Dr. Shafey’s career, he has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, including Teacher of the Year: Excellence in Teaching from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 1991, Healthcare Professional of the Year from The Arc of NJ in 2000, and Certificate of Appreciation-Teaching Medical Students from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2002.
