Surgical Approaches to Weight Loss

If you’ve tried diet and exercise and still can’t keep the weight off, weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery may be right for you. To be eligible for weight loss surgery, patients must have:

  • A body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 (about 100 pounds overweight), or,
  • A body mass index (BMI) of 35 or greater with obesity-related illness, such as hypertension, diabetes, or sleep apnea.
