Endocrine Surgical Expert Alexander L. Shifrin Joins Centrastate Healthcare System to Head New Endocrine Program

Alexander L. Shifrin, MD, FACS, FACE, ECNU, FEBS (endocrine surgery), FISS, has joined the staff of Surgical Associates of CentraState and CentraState Healthcare System in Freehold as the surgical director of CentraState’s Endocrine Program. A board-certiĀ­fied endocrine surgeon focusing exclusively on diagnosis and surgical treatment of thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disease, Dr. Shifrin has performed thousands of endocrine surgeries over his career.

ā€œDr. Shifrin brings nationally renowned expertise in endocrine surgery to our team that will greatly benefit patients in our region, and we are honored that he has chosen to practice here,ā€ said Alexander Itskovich, MD, Medical Director of the Statesir Cancer Center at CentraState. ā€œHe is a thought leader in the field who will bring tertiary endocrine care to our system.ā€

A national leader in his field, Dr. Shifrin has played key roles in prestigious clinical trials and is a prolific author, having written or contributed to dozens of textbooks and other publications on endocrine surgery.

Dr. Shifrin performs innovative techniques in minimally invasive surgeries, including outpatient thyroid and outpatient parathyroid surgery, posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy surgery, minimally invasive video-assisted endoscopic parathyroidectomy, and ultrasound guided FNA thyroid biopsy.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Endocrinology, the International Society of Surgery, the European Board of Surgery (Endocrine Surgery), and board-certified in Surgery by the American Board of Surgery, and in Endocrine Neck Ultrasound and FNA Thyroid Biopsy by the American College of Endocrinology.

Dr. Shifrin was fellowship-trained in endocrine surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and New York Presbyterian Hospital; trauma and surgical critical care at Penn State Milton Hershey Medical Center; and general surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State Milton Hershey Medical Center.

He has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, medical books and atlases, including Atlas of Thyroid Surgery, Atlas of Parathyroid Surgery, Atlas of Adrenal Surgery, Atlas of Parathyroid Imaging and Pathology and Endocrine Emergencies.
