PEDIATRIC PHYSICAL THERAPY

Pediatric physical therapy

Pediatric physical therapy helps children from birth to age 18 to improve gross motor skills and functional mobility skills. These skills will contribute to a child’s independence and self-esteem.

Using variety of physical interventions, pediatric physical therapy restores:

  • Muscle Strength
  • Range of Motion
  • Muscle Tone
  • Flexibility

Pediatric physical therapy also prepares young athletes to safely return to sports following sports related injuries.

Speech Language Therapy

We treat the following pediatric diagnoses:

  • Articulation and phonology disorders
  • Speech delay
  • Language delay or disorder
  • Auditory processing disorder
  • Feeding or swallowing difficulties
  • Fluency
  • Voice disorder
  • Cognitive impairments
  • Apraxia
  • Augmentative and alternative communication

If you would like to speak with a specialist in regards to the pediatric outpatient speech-language therapy program, call 732-294-2700.

Occupational Therapy

Our pediatric occupational therapists at CentraState help children improve function, independence, and quality of life, prevent disability, and promote health and wellness. They follow a customized pediatric occupational therapy plan with one-on-one sessions with each patient.

The following conditions are treated by the pediatric occupational therapy program:

  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Sensory processing disorders
  • Down syndrome-
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Developmental delay in milestones
  • Fine motor delay and dyspraxia (a developmental coordination disorder)
  • Handwriting deficits or difficulties
  • Birth defects

Spine HealthEarly screening—and early treatment of scoliosis—can be crucial for adolescent spine health before the curves of the spine worsen. Schroth Barcelona Institute certified therapists who specialize in adolescent scoliosis offer free screenings at CentraState for ages 10 to 17 years old.

Schedule a free scoliosis screening by calling 732-294-2700.

How is Scoliosis Diagnosed?

Screenings can be performed using a scoliometer, a device that measures the degrees of rotation at the trunk. Once it’s determined that an adolescent is at risk of having scoliosis, it’s recommended that an orthopedic specialist in scoliosis provides an evaluation and diagnosis, measures spinal curves, determines the risk for progression, and offers treatment options.

Non-surgical Schroth 3D Treatment

When an adolescent is diagnosed with scoliosis, the condition may worsen as he or she grows. The good news is treatment options for scoliosis are no longer limited to surgery or braces.

This treatment is a conservative option that uses customized exercises and breathing techniques to work toward improving the scoliosis posture. Therapy includes treating the patient at all planes of the body, making it a 3D approach. Exercises are designed to promote symmetry and improve alignment. Mirrors and other tools are also used to help patients become more aware of their body to assist with postural correction.

The physical therapist works closely with the patient, parent, and care team on this therapy, which involves active patient participation and a commitment to performing a home-based program, as well as the patient’s ongoing support with postural corrections throughout the day.

For more information about the Schroth 3D treatment for scoliosis at the OceanFirst Rehabilitation Center at CentraState, call 866-CENTRA7. To schedule an appointment, call 732-294-2700 or request an appointment online.

For children who are already receiving school services related to their educational needs, we offer adjunct therapy that complements existing therapies.

HOW THE REHABILITATION PROGRAM WORKS

The process of physical, occupational, or speech-language therapy starts with a comprehensive assessment and evaluation of your infant, child, or teen. Following the evaluation, our therapists work with you to establish customized treatment plans and goals, which are designed to help you meet your highest functional potential.

Working collaboratively, we take into account all aspects of a child’s health to promote gross motor, fine motor, and speech-language development. Treatment sessions are one-on-one and customized to the needs of each child. Our team of therapists works very closely with other health professionals at CentraState to ensure optimal care.
