Taking Quality to Heart: A New Suite for Cardiovascular Care

CentraState recently opened its new Cardiovascular Interventional Suite, which centralizes cardiac catheterization, endovascular, and interventional radiology services in a 9,300-square-foot addition on the north side of the medical center.

This innovative three-room suite features the latest technologies and the capacity to serve a greater number of patients.

The suite houses CentraState’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, which has been providing excellent outcomes since opening in 2005. Cardiac catheterization is a nonsurgical procedure that provides a more complete picture of heart and blood vessel anatomy than imaging tests alone. CentraState’s lab quickly and accurately diagnoses heart problems like blocked blood vessels and structural issues.

Interventional cardiologist Jatinchandra Patel, DO, director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, notes these benefits for the community:

Quicker diagnosis for more patients. As a licensed, full-service cardiac catheterization lab, CentraState’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab has expanded its capabilities to serve both high-risk and low-risk patients who are medically stable—helping to reduce delays and often avoiding the need to transfer to outside facilities.

Techniques designed for comfort and safety. Traditionally, most cardiac catheterization procedures have been performed by inserting a catheter (thin tube) through a blood vessel in the groin and guiding it to the heart. At CentraState, the team utilizes the radial artery in the wrist for more than 90% of patients, which is a best-practice approach that reduces the risk for bleeding issues and reduces observation time. In fact, patients can go home as early as two hours after the procedure.

Enhanced imaging and technology. The new lab offers advanced technology, including smaller catheters with better resolution. The new equipment also reduces radiation exposure for patients.

“The new suite pairs the best equipment with a best-practice approach to care,” says Dr. Patel. In addition to cardiac catheterization procedures, the Cardiovascular Interventional Suite team performs:

  • A full suite of interventional radiology procedures, including advanced therapies for patients with cancer
  • Endovascular procedures such as pulmonary embolism interventions and repairs of aortic aneurysms
